Sophomore Year Suggestions

Welcome to sophomore year! No more new high school freshman for you!

Here are several helpful tips for you to set yourself up for a successful sophomore year in high school.

Academic Success

  • Stay organized: Use a planner or digital calendar to track assignments, projects, and tests. Find the type that works best for you.

  • Strengthen study habits: Build consistent routines now. Seek help from teachers and/or tutors if you need it, and not at the last minute.

  • Prioritize core classes: Success with these in sophomore year can provide access to more rigorous Honors, AP, or Dual Enrollment courses in junior and senior years. Electives can help buffer the academic load but some don’t count in your core GPA for college admissions.

Extracurricular Activities

  • Commit to activities you genuinely enjoy: Consistent commitment to a few matters more than quantity. Sophomore year is a great time to explore new interests!

  • Pursue leadership opportunities: Volunteer for small roles now to build your leadership skills to use in junior and senior years.

  • Explore new interests: Try clubs, sports, or community activities—you might discover a passion.

  • Keep a record of activities: Jot down your involvement, awards, and service hours—it’ll help later with applications.

College & Career Planning

  • Begin exploring colleges. Admissions reps visit high schools. Many schools host college fairs in the fall. Social media can be an easy way to learn more about specific colleges.

  • Research careers: Start exploring potential career interests through job shadowing, informational interviews, and summer programs for high school students.

Personal Development

  • Read for fun: Builds vocabulary, reduces stress, and strengthens critical thinking.

  • Develop supportive relationships: Be a good friend and have good friends. Connect with classmates and teachers.

  • Practice time management: Balance academics, extracurriculars, and personal time.

  • Focus on well-being: Sleep, exercise, and healthy friendships matter as much as grades. Make time for self-care, hobbies, and relaxation to prevent burnout.
